'X-29 NASA Advanced Technology Demonstrator' Aircraft 1/72 Scale Model

In 1985 the X-29A became the world's first forward-swept aircraft to fly supersonically. The X-29A program explored cutting-edge aircraft design features, including forward-swept wings, advanced materials, a forward-mounted elevator (or canard) and a computerized flight control system.

The two X-29 aircraft, featuring one of the more unusual designs in aviation history, were flown at NASA Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility (now Armstrong Flight Research Center) at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

The demonstrators investigated advanced concepts and technologies during a multi-phased program conducted from 1984 to 1992. The program provided an engineering database that is available for the design andpment of future aircraft.

This is a gorgeous model of a beautiful X-29 Jet that is a work of art!

Mission Profile

The aircraft's forward-swept wings were mounted well back on the fuselage, while its canards (horizontal stabilizers to control pitch) were in front of the wings instead of on the tail. The complex geometries of the wings and canards combined to provide exceptional maneuverability, supersonic performance and a light structure.

The fighter-size X-29 also explored the use of advanced composites in aircraft construction; variable camber wing surfaces; the unique forward-swept wing and its thin supercritical airfoil; strake flaps; close-coupled canards; and a computerized fly-by-wire flight control system to maintain control of the otherwise unstable aircraft.

Research results showed that the configuration of forward-swept wings, coupled with movable canards, gave pilots excellent control response at up to 45 degrees angle of attack, higher than comparable fighter aircraft. During its flight history, X-29s were flown on 422 research missions. Aircraft No. 1 flew 242 in the Phase 1 portion of the program;

Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) is a United States Air Force installation in Southern California, about 22 miles (35 km) northeast of Lancaster and 15 miles (24 km) east of Rosamond.

It is the home of the Air Force Test Center and is the Air Force Material Command center for conducting and supporting research and development of flight, as well as testing and evaluation of aerospace systems from concept to combat. It operates the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and is home to NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center and considerable test activities conducted by America's commercial aerospace industry.

The base has helped develop virtually every aircraft purchased by the Air Force since World War II. Almost every United States military aircraft since the 1950s has been at least partially tested at Edwards, and it has been the site of many aviation breakthroughs.

Notable occurrences at Edwards include Chuck Yeager’s flight that broke the sound barrier in the Bell-X1, test flights of the North American X-15, the first landings of the Space Shuttle, and the 1986 around-the-world flight of the Rutan Voyager.

Collectors' Hint - What are my choices with Plastic Model purchasing and collecting?

It is the nature of the Space and Aviation market that Space and Aircraft Model Kits of important space or aviation vehicles tend to be limited in production or alternatively sell very quickly.  Two different examples are the premier Apollo 11 kits or the P-51 Mustang.

Many model kits are 're-launched' on significant anniversaries.

Typically, the two key choices when purchasing plastic model kits are:

i) Make the Plastic Model or

ii) Preserve the Plastic Model 'pristine' in its box and with all original plans and parts for the future.

The former choice i) provides the enjoyment and satisfaction of model making, more so when they are rare or unusual models.

The latter choice ii) can sometimes result in a purchase worth thousands of dollars in later years or decades.  There are hundreds of examples.

Of course a 3rd choice is to benefit from both and purchase two models!

Limited Editions are exceptional examples!
