US Scott 231 2c Columbian Broken Hat XFS NH Gem PSE Graded 95, encapsulated

Super pretty and super scarce and without the common gum wrinkles that result in lower PSE grade assignments.  This example, with pristine unblemished gum, is post office fresh.  As you may have observed “Broken Hats” are incredibly difficult to locate in XFS condition.  Only approximately 1 in 15 231’s are the variety.  Additionally this example is attributed by PSE on the label as a “broken hat.”  PSE is notoriously inconsistent with giving the attribution from my experience.  As far as I am aware this is the highest PSE-graded never hinged 2c Broken Hat Columbian.

Effective January 2023 PSE no longer encapsulates, unfortunately, so if you like a collectible investment that you can safely admire, in a state of preservation, and won’t lose its grade through mishandling then an encapsulated stamp is the right stamp for you.  My preference is that condition rarities and high value stamps are encapsulated and it’s my opinion these stamps will be highly sought in 10-20 years when the sense of it finally catches on.
