In 1918 this aspiring Japanese whisky distiller travelled to Scotland to learn organic chemistry and the malt whisky production process. 2 years later he returned to Japan after marrying Glasgow lass, Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan, and established Nikka Whisky Distilling in 1934, after working with Kotobukiya for several years.
