Optical Condition

• A couple small coating nicks on the front element and some small specks of dust inside - nothing unusual for a lens of this vintage - but otherwise pristine. Very unlikely to affect image quality.
• The drop-in UV filter is covered in small scratches, probably from incompetent cleaning by a previous user, but hey, it's there. Sometimes it goes missing with big old telephotos like this one. This damage may be the source of some of the lower contrast, higher CA, etc. I'm not sure.

Cosmetic Condition

• Very rough in external appearance
• Heavy wear on edges
• Numerous scuffs, scratches, and small dents to lens body
• A previous owner had duct taped the lens cap to the body. I 

MechanicalCondition

• Aperture blades are clean and actuate smoothly and as intended.
• Focus is smooth for the most part, but there is a bit of resistance at one point.

ItemDescription

This lens is a good option for dipping your toe into fast telephoto primes,or as an affordable telephoto for the FD mount. That's why I bought it. Iwanted to find out whether the lack of zoom was worth the increase in speed. Itwas. However, I am not skilled or patient enough to shoot birds in flightwithout autofocus, so I moved on to autofocus cameras.

The optical quality of this non-L version is not the best -rendering is not very contrasty, fringing is strong on strong lightingcontrasts, and sharpness leaves a bit to be desired. I'm not sure how much ofthis is caused by the lens' design and how much is caused by the scratches onthe drop-in filter. In any case, I've included a couple of sample images, soyou can judge for yourself.

A couple things that are nifty about this lens compared to alternatives from other brands:

• Focuses a bit closer than most lenses in its class: most focus to 1m, but this focuses to about 
• Takes drop-in filters
• The lens hood can be screwed into place once extended so there's no chance doesn't fall back down when you point it upward.

Compatibility

This lens is only directly compatible with manual-focus Canon FD film cameras without an adapter. However, it will work on many mirrorless digital camera mounts if you buy the correct adapter(s).
