A top-quality replacement negative-earth electronic 10 volt ‘instrument supply’ voltage stabiliser (voltage regulator) that can be used to directly replace an old-style bimetallic stabiliser on most classic cars (Triumph, MG, Land Rover, Jaguar, Austin etc.). It directly replaces items in the Smiths BR13xx range. You are choosing a first-rate product - more than 900 sold, but relisting has lost the many positive reviews (see additional photos).

(see below if you require a positive-earth stabiliser)

The same component is also available at: eBay item number: 155747764644

The component employs a top-quality semiconductor regulator specifically design for vehicular applications and carefully selected capacitors. It will withstand 2-battery jump-starts and is protected against short-circuit and thermal overload, it should even withstand reverse battery connection.

The device exhibits a low 'drop-out' performance and should typically maintain 10 volts (typically well within +/-1%) output with an input of 10.5 volts. The maximum continuous output current is 1 Amp, which should be far more than is needed for fuel and water temperature gauges; a good thermal heat-sink would be recommended for higher loads.

When comparing with other 'negative earth' stabiliser products on the market, please be aware that some of the products (including more expensive ones!) are using poor designs or cheaper components, rather than automotive quality devices, making them much more vulnerable to failure; these may also require a higher voltage (at least 12v) to provide a stable 10 volt output. Replica cases are no guarantee!

The mounting tab (and essential earth connection) will allow the stabiliser to be mounted directly on the rear of the speedometer – a common location for the original component. This lug is an integral part of the semiconductor device,  so the arrangement ensures a good quality earth and thermal connection. The lug cannot be 'larger'; if you need to make alternative mounting arrangements please consider securing the device to an intermediary metal mounting plate.

The component is a similar size to the original component measuring 15x20x30mm, they are ‘hand-made’ by the seller in small numbers to a good standard and are individually checked. Fitting is simple, directly replacing the original component.

The standard connectors used are 0.25" blades; the input connector is male, the output connector is fully-insulated female (as shown in the picture), male output (appropriate to some older cars, generally <1968) is available on request. Other variations, like dual input/output connectors or longer wires are also available by request when ordering, it just takes a day or two longer.

Please note that the 'compatible vehicles' list is only a guide, please check for yourself before ordering. Non-inclusion of your vehicle in the list does not mean the item is unsuitable. If in doubt, please ask; technical advice comes for free.

Both negative and positive earth stabilisers are also available rebuilt into your original casing - see my separate listing (Item number: 282480406434) - for those keen to maintain 'originality' of appearance. Positive-earth devices are only available as rebuilds.

A negative earth 6 volt version for much older cars that have been converted from 6v to 12v can also be supplied; note that these devices cannot be produced to the same full automotive standard, but do employ thermal shut-down and current limiting that should offer protection against accidental short-circuiting or overload.

Please note that, as I have no control over the installation, no warranty is given or implied for any consequential damage that might result from failure of the device.
