In fair condition. Green cloth boards lightly scuffed at edges, and corners are worn. Gilt lettering and illustrations bright and clean. Some age-staining to boards on both volumes. Heads and tails of spines collapsed. Top edges gilt. Front and rear gutters of Vol. I split, binding mesh exposed. Vol. I is missing front fly-leaf. No known previous ownership or marginalia. Light toning throughout text-block, some instances of foxing. Rear gutter of Vol. II is fragile, but not split. Instance of worming on fore-edge of Vol. I (see photo 14). Binding intact, Vol. I fragile. Please see photos. 

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre director, and critic. He is widely regarded as the greatest and most influential writer in the German language, and his work has had a profound and wide-ranging influence on Western literature. Faust is an epic closet drama which created a sensation when published. The second part was finished by Goethe the year of his death, and posthumously published.
