The denarius remained the unrivaled workhorse of Roman silver coinage until about A.D. 214 when the emperor Caracalla (A.D. 198 to 217) introduced the double-denarius, a coin usually called an antoninianus. Theoretically it was tariffed at two denarii, but it contained only about 1.5 times the silver content.
