This is not the only day of the year when we remember, pay tribute, and talk about those who gave their lives to defend Ukraine, its statehood, independence and unity. But this is a special day, an opportunity for everyone in society to focus together on memory, honor and gratitude.
The date was established by the decree of Volodymyr Zelenskyi in 2019 in memory of the tragic events of August 29, 2014 in Ilovaisk, Donetsk region.
Since mid-August 2014, fierce battles between the occupiers and the armed forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been raging in the city. On August 24-25, Ukrainian battalions were encircled. On August 28, as a result of negotiations, a decision was made to withdraw Ukrainian defenders through the "green corridor".
However, on August 29, the Russian military opened fire on the evacuation convoy. According to official data, 366 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, 429 were wounded of various degrees of severity, and 300 were captured.
Their path lay through sunflower fields. Therefore, the sunflower became the traditional symbol of the memorial day on August 29.
