This note before you is the only DATEBACK to surface for this bank, the First National Bank of Canal Dover, Charter #4331.   There are only three 1902 series notes with the first title "Canal Dover."  This note, however, is THE ONLY one in the DATEBACK type.    In total there are only 10 large size notes known with the first title: 4 $5 1882 BBs, 1 $50 1882BB, 2 $100 1882BBs, 2 1902PBs and this single 1902 DATEBACK.

The only time this note appeared at auction was twelve years ago when it brought $632.50 at a Heritage Auction.  The old PCGS grading authority graded it VF-20 APPARENT with minor stains.  In today's grading climate, the "Apparent" would not be applicable as this note only shows normal wear.   To be fully transparent, there are two very small fold holes to the top right of the last "R" in Dover.  They are not significant and would not even be mentioned with grading.  In this seller's opinion, this is a solid VF-20 with no reservations.

The First National Bank was chartered in 1890, just a few numbers, 38, after the Exchange National Bank of Canal Dover.  Bank officers were H.W. Streb as president and A.V. Lind as cashier. Their joint term of office was between 1916 and 1920.

Originally named Canal Dover due to its location and origins along the Ohio and Erie Canal, the land was platted in 1807.  Beginning in 1815, the post office first began operation.  Canal Dover incorporated as a village in 1842 and became a city under the Ohio municipal code of 1903.  On February 12, 1916, the city officially changed its name to just Dover.

Pricing: The last first title 1902 $10 PB sold recently (4-2023) for $435.  It was an EF-45(PCGS.)   The last $5 1882BB nice VF sold two years ago for $1799.  This one is unique in that it is the only DATEBACK and therefore fairly priced at $1090.

Pricing:  We consider prices from about 2009 to present relevant.  Prices for the first decade of this century were in a heated and frenzied market, so those high(er) prices are NOT relevant.  Nevertheless, within the past year, the Ohio national currency market has shown increased pressure and higher prices are reflected at public auctions for rare and high grade notes.

N.B.  Sales tax may be an issue for you when purchasing.  Depending upon the state of delivery, you may have sales tax, you may have none, or you may subject to a threshold tax.  PLEASE ASK.  Ebay tells me they are prepared to give refunds for states which have no tax. even though a sales tax may be implemented at the time of sale.  This seller will always assist you.  I have the information on the sales tax applicability for each state. So please consult me.  I have been instrumental in obtaining over $10,000 in sales tax refunds for my eBay clients.  My service for this is FREE to my clients.    My personal issue: sales tax is a levy on tangible personal property.  By definition, all money is intangible, so why should it be taxed at all?  Ever!

P.S.:  If you are wondering why a dealer from Miami, Florida is dealing in Ohio National Currency, it is because I spend about 6 months of the year in Ohio, as well.  In Ohio, I am known as a dealer’s dealer and am consulted by other dealers and financial institutions for price guidance and as an acquisition specialist.  The point is: my prices are NOT taken out of the air.  They are carefully decided by the market and rationality.
