In good condition with minimal shelf-wear to exterior including rubbing to boards and foxing to text-blocks. Hinges are intact in both folios. Volume one contains the previous owner's pen notations inside the front board and on the title page; along with some underlining in the introduction. His faculty stamps are on the title page, table of contents page and introduction page. Volume two contains pen markings on the title page and on the table of contents page. Academic language books from the prestigious library of language scholar Johannes Rahder (1898-1988): Dutch Orientalist, professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden (1931-1946), and Yale University (1947-1965), and once depicted by legendary Langston Hughes in 'I Wonder, I Wander', as a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages", after a brief meeting on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933. These folios are extremely scarce, on the topic of 'gypsy studies'; with volume one containing information on the phonetics and dialects of Gypsy languages, and volume two containing Gypsy stories and tall tales.
