Background
The tradition of carpet making in Morocco goes back many thousands of years and these beautiful rustic craft items are now very much in demand throughout the world.
Their individual patterns and symbols have their own meaning and have been passed down the generations according to area and tribe.
Process
Every stage of the carpet making process is done by hand; starting from sheering, then spinning the wool, followed by careful selection of the desired natural hues and threads for the main background.
The entire process of weaving and knotting often takes many weeks or even months.
Sourcing
Since these carpets are so popular, they can fetch very high prices and sadly the 'factory production line' and foreign copies are flooding the market.
This is particularly why we go in search of isolated and remote villages hoping to find the undiscovered and unusual.
We found this beautiful rug in a small Moroccan village and were attracted to the unusual colours and designs as well as the deep plush pile(3.5cm deep). We discovered that Mira and Yamna (the makers) added some additional wool to create the wonderful vibrant colours and patterns we see in this carpet. The colours on this are: black, green, pink, purple on a natural ivory background. (Please be aware that the photograph may not show the colours as naturally seen.)
Utility
This carpet makes a real statement and compliments today's clean and simple interior décor. It can be used as a carpet, but also often as a wall hanging, talking point and fashion statement. A real interior designer's dream.
