Historical background:
The main weapon of the "Weasel" infantry fighting vehicle is a Rh202 20 mm machine gun, produced by Rheinmetall. The gun is pneumatic recharging, ammunition belt feed, remote control firing, simple structure, high reliability, the high and low firing range of the machine gun is -17 ~ +70 degrees, the direction firing range is 360 degrees, the maximum rate of fire up to 800 ~ 1 000 rounds/min, the projectiles launched are tracer armor-piercing bullets and grenades, fed by 3 ammunition belts. When fired, it can penetrate 32 mm thick steel armor at a firing range of 1,000 meters, which is more than enough against light armored vehicles, but it is not enough against the main armor of advanced infantry fighting vehicles. The effective range against soft targets is 2,000 metres and the effective fire height against aircraft is 1,600 metres. The gun commander and vehicle commander operate the machine gun through an electric control device to achieve remote fire. The base ammunition for the 20 mm round is 1,250 rounds.
To the right of the gun was a 7.62 mm parallel machine gun with a base ammunition of 2,500 rounds. On the left are six 76mm smoke bomb launchers. The unique feature of the "Weasel" is that there is a 7.62 mm machine gun that fires backwards at the rear of the body, and the ammunition base is also 2 500 rounds, which can achieve remote control shooting, and the direction of firing is 180 degrees, and the high and low firing is -15 ~ +55 degrees, which is used to form a ring shooting with the main gun and the parallel machine gun. What's more, the "inverted Kwanin" type rear machine gun is armored and connected to the top of the body by a sealed rotating bearing seat, ensuring the top of the body is sealed. The infantry can use four spherical firing holes to shoot outward with submachine guns, with a directional firing range of 40 degrees and a high and low firing range of -10 to +25 degrees.
The fire control system includes: electric control device, spare manual control device, overshooting device, gun chief sight and car chief sight, etc. Both scopes have magnification of 2x and 6x (changeable) and can be replaced with infrared night vision scopes during night operations. On the left side of the gun is an infrared/white light searchlight that can be pitched along with the gun. The commander had eight periscopes, and the gun commander had three periscopes.
Because of the remote control method of firing, the gunner and the vehicle commander can not sit in the turret, so that the turret can be made small, reducing the probability of being shot, which is one of the advantages of the "Weasel" infantry fighting vehicle. There were several changes to the turret of each version of the Weasel. The artillery caliber of the "Weasel" infantry fighting vehicle has been small, and the power is insufficient. This is also one of the reasons why the German military once wanted to develop the "Weasel" 2 infantry fighting vehicle.
