Nycthantes is a tree that grows to about 33 feet or 10 meters tall with a gray bark, it is abundant in flowering with white flowers with a coral colored heart and a star shape. The flowers drop early in the morning, after having been open all night. It grows in dry deciduous forests and slopes. It is distributed in Nepal, India, Himalayas, Sumatra, India and Jawa. The leaves have been used in ancient medicine for the relief of sciatica, arthritis and as a laxative.

In a tree considered divine by Hindu mythology, in the Mahabharata it is one of the 5 trees that are described in the legend of the Samudra Manthana

The essential oil is extracted from the flowers, and the collection and distillation are done at night. Its aroma is somewhat similar to Jasmine but its character is much lighter and more delicate.
