The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. By Charles Dickens and printed in London by Chapman and Hall. Illustrations by Phiz. ***First Edition Early Issue, Preface dated 1844, All plates present & intact, 624 pp, 8.75” x 5.75”, 8vo, contemporary 3/4 leather hardcover.

***Points of First Edition, Early Issue: This is NOT a first issue because in the frontispiece, the sign on the wooden post CORRECTLY reads “£100”  and not “100£” as it incorrectly does in the first issue. However, it is a first edition early issue because 1) the errata leaf includes 14 lines instead of 13, and 2) the preface is dated “Twenty-Fifth June 1844”.

In fair condition. Minor rubbing and wear to boards and spine. Light loss to part of binding at head of spine. Appears to be light repair work to top of exterior front hinge. Minor cracking to hinges that does not impact overall readability. Text block remains bound well. Periodic black-and-white illustrations throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing.

With illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), known by his pen name of Phiz and an illustrator of many Dickens 1st editions. Presents well. Gift quality.
