History:

Made in clear and aqua-green glass, the TURTLE nursing bottle was introduced into the United

States from England in 1864. It was designed to be used with some very elaborate fittings which

consisted of an internal tube, stopper, long rubber hose, mouth guard and nipple. It was very

popular for about fifty years and came in plain, embossed, graduated and vented styles. The

"duck variation of the TURTLE nursing bottle had a very long neck, the "shoe" had an

exceptionally long body and was also known as a

"tear drop". The unsanitary internal tube and

long hose fittings were lethal to many infants. The bottle's terrible reputation gave rise to the

name that was given to it by a concerned medical profession; the

" murder bottle". Buffalo, New

York prohibited the sale of the bottle in 1897 and other cities followed suit. The "murder

bottle" died a lingering death. The John M. Maris Co. still advertised it in 1913 and the Sears

Roebuck Co. catalogue listed it until 1915.
