Giovanni Patroni (1869-1951) was an Italian archaeologist and prehistorian who is remembered as the author of the first major synthesis of Italian prehistory. He had the courage to dare to oppose the ideas of Luigi Pigorini even before Pigorini died. In 1901, Patroni was appointed Professor of Archaeology at the University of Pavia, and in parallel Archaeological Superintendent for Lombardy from 1905-24. In 1927, he transferred to the newly-founded State University of Milan and retired in 1938.
