Nice and unusual antique copper engraved map of America by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), 17th century. 

Edited by Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), Atlas Minor. 

This is a reduced version of the Americas map Hondius engraved for Gerard Mercator's folio atlas. 

North America is very elongated and the west coast is separated by only a narrow strait from Asiae Pars. South America is shown with a more or less correct western coastline and there is a large southern continent incorporating New Guinea and Tierra del Fuego. 

The map is decorated with sea monsters, sailing ships, and a nice title cartouche.

Condition : good condition, a short edge tear at bottom left that has been closed on verso with archival tape, old colors.
