This tree is native to central and southern Japan, and on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. It is now widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. 


General Description: Semi-dwarf, evergreen tree/shrub with blue-green foliage. Can be grown as a bonsai.

Plant Details: 


Growth Habit: Slow-growing in a densely pyramidal fashion.  


Leaf Structure: Needled evergreen that is soft to the touch. Blue-green in summer turning grey-ish blue in the winter, with silvery undersides. 
Stem Structure: Green, maturing to brown. 
Bark Structure: Dark brown to burgundy ? peels in strips as it matures. 


Soil Preference: Loam, Chalk, Silt, Sand, Clay ? prefers well-drained. 
Watering Preference: Medium 
Sunlight Preference: Full Sun to Partial Shade 


Bloom Time: No true flowers; pollen bearing cones. 
Bloom Color: Pollen bearing cones are reddish growing from the branch tips. 


Fruit Production: No true fruit; female seed-bearing cones that are green when immature, maturing to brown. 
Nut Production: N/A 


Main Use of Plant: 

Indoor: Makes a wonderful bonsai. 
Outdoor: Plant as a privacy screen, hedge, along borders, or as a specimen. Can also be grown in containers. 


Winterization Methods: Shelter from strong winds, and apply a thick mulch along the base of the tree to help insulate and retain moisture. 


Fun Fact: This cultivar was introduced in 1934 by Boulevard Nurseries in Rhode Island. It was a sport of ?Squarrosa?. 


General Notes: 

Can put on 6 to 10 inches of growth in a year.

Soil pH level guide: Acid to Neutral to Alkaline. Acidic soil has a pH of 1 to 6.5. Neutral soil has a pH of 6.6 to 7.3. Alkaline soil has a pH of 7.4 to 14. If you do not know your garden's pH level, please go out and buy a cheap soil pH testing kit which can be found in any hardware store, typically under $5.00.
