The Qantas Airbus Industrie A380; VH-OQL [Oscar-Quebec-Lima] is in the new  'Silver Roo' Livery, losing the 'pillar box' red for a more sophisticated, slightly darker red with a contrasting silver strip and QANTAS decals (only the 5th change since the inception of Qantas) creating a stunningly impressive model.

Qantas was the First Australian Airline to fly the Airbus Industrie A380.  The 'Australian Dream' and Australian requirement remains to be able to fly directly from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to London.  [Qantas has established Perth - London direct with the B787 'Dreamliner'.]

The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by European manufacturer Airbus. It is the world's largest passenger airliner, and the airports at which it operates have upgraded facilities to accommodate it. It was initially named Airbus A3XX and designed to challenge Boeing's monopoly in the large aircraft market. The A380 made its first flight on 27 April 2005 and entered commercial service on 25 October 2007 with Singapore Airlines. An improved version, the A380plus, is under development.

The Qantas Boeing B747 "Longreach 'City of Canberra'"; VH-OJA; ["Oscar-Juliet-Alpha"]

Qantas's relationship with the 747 dates back to 1967, when it first ordered four 747Bs.  Qantas incredibly operated two 747SPs, initially to Wellington with its infamously short 'aircraft carrier' runway before deploying the type on nonstop trans-Pacific flights.

The first of these entered service in September 1971, and in time the airline would operate almost every major 747 variant, including the 747SP, the 747 Combi, the 747-300 (which introduced the extended upper deck), the 747-400, and the 747-400ER (Extended Range).

In all, Qantas has operated 65 747s, taking delivery of 57 new 747s from Boeing, purchasing three 747-400s secondhand and operating five leased aircraft at various times. For a period between the retirement of its last 707 in March 1978 and the delivery of its first 767 in July 1985, Qantas operated an all-747 fleet.

If you have ever flown with Qantas on their B747 Jumbo Jets, this is a fantastic model to commemorate the history of the B747 with Qantas throughout decades of service. Named the City of Canberra and registered as VH-OJA, [Oscar-Juliet-Alpa] this aircraft was named after Australia's capital city and was the first Boeing 747-438 delivered to Qantas.

Both of these beautiful executive-style models are displayed on their stands "in climb attitude, gear up, just after take-off ".

These new larger size models of thQantas Airbus Industrie A380 AND Qantas Boeing B747 "Longreach 'City of Canberra'"  represent one of the most important Airliner advancements to occur in the 20th century and is a fast build clip together high quality, very detailed plastic model.

About Qantas

The Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited (QANTAS) was registered as a business on 16 November 1920.  Qantas was 100 years old in 2020.

Qantas Airways  is the flag carrier of Australia and its largest airline by fleet size, international flights and international destinations. It is the third oldest airline in the World, after KLM, and Avianca having been founded in November 1920; it began international passenger flights in May 1935. The Qantas name comes from 'QANTAS' an acronym for its original name, 'Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services' and it is nicknamed  "The Flying Kangaroo". Qantas is a founding member of the OneWorld airline alliance.

Qantas entered the Jet Age in July 1959 with Boeing 707 services to the USA. The service was extended to London (via New York). Sydney-London services (via India) began in October 1959.   In total, Qantas took delivery of seven Boeing 707-138 aircraft, and a further six-138Bs.

From 7 November 1959 to 30 May 1963, Qantas operated six DE Havilland Comet 4 aircraft, wet leased from BOAC. The aircraft were crewed by BOAC flight and cabin crew and featured Qantas titles on the fuselage in place of the BOAC titles

Qantas became the world's only all Boeing 747 operator.  In 1981, two short body 747SPs also entered the fleet for flights to Wellington [due to its short runway], and then they were subsequently used on non-stop flights between Sydney and Los Angeles.

In November 1984, Qantas commenced service with six Boeing 747-338 aircraft with an extended upper deck.

On its delivery flight the first, 1989-built Boeing 747-400 flew a record-breaking nonstop flight from London to Sydney in little more than 20 hours; as of January 2015 that record still stands.

From 1985, the first of seven Boeing 767-238ERs entered the fleet. These were followed by the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, with the first example delivered in August 1988; seven additional Boeing 767-336ERs were leased and subsequently purchased from British Airways entering service from August 2000.

2007 saw the introduction of the Qantas Airbus Industrie A380.  Its acquisition was to enable the phasing out of the famous Boeing B747 Jumbo Jet.  With the A380 Qantas achieved a perfect flight via utilising the A380 Flight Management Computers for a Sydney 'Gate to Gate' Los Angeles flight.

2017 saw the introduction of the Qantas Boeing B787 Dreamliner that has the capability to fly from Perth-Australia to London-UK non-stop.

Together they represent many of the most important Airliner advancements to occur in modern 20th and 21st century history.

Collectors' Hint - What are my choices with Plastic Model purchasing and collecting?

It is the nature of the Space and Aviation market that Space and Aircraft Model Kits of important space or aviation vehicles tend to be limited in production or alternatively sell very quickly.  Two different examples are the premier Apollo 11 kits or the P-51 Mustang.

Many model kits are 're-launched' on significant anniversaries.

Typically, the two key choices when purchasing plastic model kits are:

i) Make the Plastic Model or

ii) Preserve the Plastic Model 'pristine' in its box and with all original plans and parts for the future.

The former choice i) provides the enjoyment and satisfaction of model making, more so when they are rare or unusual models.

The latter choice ii) can sometimes result in a purchase worth thousands of dollars in later years or decades.  There are hundreds of examples.

Of course, the 3rd choice is to benefit from both and purchase two models!

Limited Editions are exceptional examples!
