This pamphlet describes a "large and enthusiastic meeting of Scotsman an other admirers of Robert Burns." Burns (1759-1796) was a Scottish poet and lyricist who was widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland. This report depicts the proceedings of this celebration in which participants took turns reciting Burns' poems, making toasts, and celebrating their shared heritage. This pamphlet is signed on front wrap by Charles Hale (1831-1882) a legislator and diplomat from Boston who served as the Speaker of the House of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and later as the consul-general to Cairo under the Lincoln, and then as the Assistant Secretary of State under Hamilton Fish. Hale was a prominent figure in politics and is cited as responsible for arresting John Surrat, co-conspirator in the assignation of Abraham Lincoln.
