Electro-Motive Diesel traces its roots to the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, a designer and marketer of gasoline-electric self-propelled rail cars founded in 1922 and later renamed Electro-Motive Company (EMC). In 1930, General Motors purchased Electro-Motive Company and the Winton Engine Co., and in 1941 it expanded EMC's realm to locomotive engine manufacturing as Electro-Motive Division (EMD).
The F3 was one of the most successful cab units the builder ever produced with upwards of 2,000 A and B units constructed by the time production had ended. The locomotive could be found in use on virtually all of the major railroads at the time and helped extinguished the use of steam in standard freight service.
The EMD F3 is a 1,500-horsepower (1,100 kW) B-B freight- and passenger-hauling carbody diesel locomotive produced between July 1945 and February 1949 by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division. Final assembly was at GM-EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant. A total of 1,111 cab-equipped lead A units and 696 cabless booster B units were built.

Condition: BRAND NEW, NEVER USED, IN ORIGINAL BOXES. It appears this car never left the original box. Maybe for original inspection and then returned to its shelf box, inside the original shipping box.
HE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A LAYOUT TO RUN HIS TRAINS!!! The original owner tried to limit his collection to Lionel Limited Editions and unique pieces. He would purchase a piece, bring it home, take it out of its box and set it on a 3 ft. section of track. Along with a small transformer to test electronics, that's all he had!! Then he would take pictures of his purchases and then put them in their boxes, and THEY NEVER LEFT THEIR BOX AGAIN!! NEVER RUN ON RAILS!!!!
