Texas US Marshal & Attorney Hal Gosling 1885 Loss 3 Train Shoot Out Tin Photo #1

As pictured in this lot you will receive approximately 43 photos and several pieces of documentation, as well as newspaper clippings from that time.

Available to purchase is part of West Texas history. Regarding West Texas Marshal Harrington Lee Gosling and the shootout on the train as he and two others, Deputies US, Marshals John Manning, and Fred Loring escorted, two convicts robbers, James B. Pit ( aka Tom pits or Jim Hall/Hale) and Charles Yeager from Austin to a San Antonio jail.

As many people knew Marshall Gosling as a kindly man, but yet a bit of a daredevil, but on that fateful day, his kind heartedness or fearlessness, were both to blame for Gosling’s error in judgment and would be the ultimate cost three lives, one of them his own. The pair of murderous thieves, Pit and Yeager ran with a confederation of miscreants known as the robbers, cave gang or the hotels gang. They have been described in their times to be young in years but old and crime. This gang had torn a bloody swoth across South Texas in the early 1800s, one robbery of theirs took place at a post office in Smithwick 50 miles north west of Austin. That’s the crime that landed both Pitt and Yeager in the US District Court in Austin Texas.

I believe this is a piece of Texas history. The complete lot will be sold in my eBay store in two separate lots. Each lot will present pictures of Gosling’s family, as well as some documentation which will consist of an early account of what happened on that day in 1885 as well as newspaper clippings and hand written letters. As I cannot show in photos the complete history of this lot it is spectacular. Please feel free to look closely at the photos as they will give you as much information as I can visually show on this West Texas tragedy.

As I cannot authenticate this, as I am not a historian, please feel free to do your research to give you the confidence that I have to know that this is as true to form material as I can bring to this lot. My goal is to preserve history in this listing.

I have tried to take pictures from different angles and up close so you can get a true description.
