Pearls, the birthstone for the month of October, are the ultimate symbol for wisdom. Valued for their calming effects, pearls represent serenity, while being able to strengthen valuable relationships and convey a sense of safety. Pearls also symbolize purity, as well as integrity and loyalty. Creating pearls is a fascinating process that requires much time and dedication. Akoya Pearls are most commonly used for necklaces and other jewelry, with perfect round shapes, bright mirror-like luster and neutral colors, akoya are favored by most retailers and consumers as the classic pearl choice. The akoya pearl is a saltwater cultured pearl from the akoya oyster (Pinctada fucata martensii). The akoya oyster is the smallest pearl-producing oyster with the average akoya pearl only measuring 7mm. Unlike freshwater pearls, akoya pearl oysters rarely produce more than two pearls per harvest, and are usually perfectly round. This shape, combined with the high-luster found on top-quality akoya pearls, and their relative rarity compared to freshwater pearls, give akoya pearls a higher perceived value.
