John M. Read (1797-1874) was an American jurist and a Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He was a popular writer during the Civil War, which he defended the actions of the Union and defended the Constitution. This 1863 pamphlet is a printing of a lecture to the law school of University of Pennsylvania in which Read details the history of property jurisprudence in England and America and the application of such in the modern day. It is signed by "General Hubbell", or, Levi Hubbell (1808-1876) and American jurist and politician from New York before he moved to Wisconsin Territory in the 1840s and became a prominent figure as that territory became a state.
