French Bourgogne Vertical Oval Barrel, Antique Brass-ringed oak barrel with handle mid 20th century, a hole on the top for filling and emptying the contents.
This type of small barrel was once used to transport wine or alcohol in the vineyards, or in the fields during harvest or ploughing, so that winegrowers or peasants could quench their thirst.
The handle was used for transport. The barrel could be considered a gourd.
This barrel comes from a winery in Burgundy.
To reuse it today, it would have to be soaked in water to regain its watertightness (the wood having dried out since the mid 20th century).
