This is a model 1 James Ashborn serial # 1304 {parlor} guitar made before 1851 in Wolcottville CT.  It is at least 173 years old and in near perfect condition with no splits, warping, bulging or repairs.  There is a 3/4 inch unrepaired crack on the back (not at a joint) that is stable and does not affect the sound or the overall appearance of the guitar. The finish has an antique patina by no harsh wear or serious scratches.  It is in 100% original condition and comes with its original case, also in excellent condition (though the lining has been replaced).  It is also in perfect playing condition with good action and superior sound.  The back and sides are rosewood, the top is spruce, the bridge ,nut and fingerboard are ebony.  It has the classic 19th centry "ice cream cone" neck joint and  a lovely dovetail  jointed head stock.  Ashborn was a contemporary of CF Martin and his guitars were sold through Firth Pond & Co of New York (they were also the music publisher of Stephen Foster)  His guitars can be found in museum collections and are the subject of a book by Dr. Philip F. Gura.  If you are looking for an authentic guitar for playing 19th Century American music or are a Civil War reenactor, this is the perfect instrument for you. See/hear video soon
