Large unusual world map by Nicolas SANSON D'ABBEVILLE (1600-1667), titled :

"Mappe-Monde, ou Carte Generale Du Monde Dessignee en deux plan-Hemispheres par le Sr. Sanson d'Abbeville, Geographe Ordinaire de la Majeste".

This double hemisphere world map shows California as an Island. It is one of the first maps to distinguish the Great Lakes and name Lac Superior and Lake Michigan, here called Lac des puans (lake of evil smells). All five of the Great Lakes were not named until Sanson's 1656 map of New France. The faint outline of Terra Magellanica appears in the south. Australia is only partially shown, and labeled simply Beach, with place names on the south and west coasts reflecting Dutch discoveries. Neither Tasmania or New Zealand is shown. The map is typical of Sanson's "scientific" style of cartography with no decorative elements.

Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was one of the first geographe to realise a double hemisphere map.

Born in Abbeville, active from 1627, Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville was to bring about the rise of French cartography, although the fierce competition of the Dutch would last until the end of the century. His success was partly owing to the partnership with the publisher Pierre Mariette. In 1644 the latter had purchased the business of Melchior Tavernier, and helped Sanson with financial support in producing the maps. In 1657 Pierre Mariette died, however his son, also named Pierre, co-published Les Cartes Générales de toutes les parties du Monde the following year. It was the first folio French produced world atlas.
