FOREWORD

HE hundreds of thousands of people who can visit The Metropolitan

Museum of Art personally each year are only a small percentage of

T

those in this country who would like to have access to this treasure house-

to learn about history, about good taste, about the creative spirit of past

and present-to absorb those things that form their true cultural heritage.

In the vast art collections of the Metropolitan Museum are represented

the many nations of the world-virtually every civilization and epoch for

the past 5000 years. It is without doubt one of the most outstanding visual

reference libraries anywhere in existence.

The Museum has felt increasingly the duty and desire to see these

these Metropolitan Miniatures and in other ways-until it can fulfill the

works of art made available to an increasing number of people-through

critically needed function of a free, informal liberal arts college for this

and coming generations.

The miniature color reproductions of the twenty-four works of art

included in Series I. are only the beginning of what is hoped may be an

important national program of art education. With your support we shall

hope to publish and distribute, ever more widely, further series of miniature

reproductions until an entire cross-section of the Museum's galleries will

have extended itself throughout the nation and the world.

This Album provides a brief background description of each painting

or object in Series I. And for those who would like to explore further into

any of the periods or subjects found here, there is a general reading list

provided on the last

page.
