C8547  Ornate 19th C Teak Lacquerware.  Rice. Alms. Buddhist.  Mandalay.

Decorative rice boxes were - and still are - used to deliver and distribute rice to monks.  Glutinous aka Sticky Rice portions were placed in banana leaf packets.  and then into these handmade containers.  Such containers were either taken to the streets where monks passed by or to temples

This ornate 23" tall container is in excellent condition both inside and out.  22.5” tall x 10” in diameter at widest point.  Base is 10.5” in diameter

Where the base narrows, you can see some openwork formed by small bamboo pillars.  Check it out.

Teak rice lacquerware - like this one - is from the Mandalay Region of Burma.

Phenomenal condition and lots of lucky elephants.  Authentic and from the late 1800s.  Rare in this condition.  Has been in a private collection for over 50 years!

I have been a collector for over 60 years and have spent this time searching for the most unique, wonderous and culturally-significant pieces from far off places like Africa, Middle East, South & Southeast Asia, Central & South America and the Oceania Islands.  Most were acquired from the country of origin and/or from avid collectors.  All that I know about the item - through provenance or my own research - is shown in the listing.  It’s now time for me to thin out my collection. I am sure you will enjoy this item and its history as much as I have.
