In 1978, the iconic analog synthesizer "MS-20" had a companion in the form of the Step Sequencer "SQ-10." Fast forward more than 30 years, just like the revival of the MS-20 as the "MS-20 mini," the SQ-10 has been reborn as the more contemporary "SQ-1."
The SQ-1 is a compact 2 x 8 step sequencer. It boasts a rich array of connection terminals compatible with various synthesizers, from vintage analog synths to the latest compact synths. With diverse sequencer modes and the ability to switch step buttons, it allows for spontaneous performances, reminiscent of the volca series. Liberated from the typical DAW parameter editing approach, you can concentrate on finely tuning your ears and fingertips, truly gaining musical inspiration. Because the SQ-1 supports the Hz/V standard, it can perfectly control the MS-20 and MS-20 mini. It also supports the V/Oct standard, allowing you to set the voltage level of the CV output (※) and the polarity of the GATE output according to the characteristics of the connected device. This enables control of various other synthesizers. ※ Supports V/Oct at 1V, 2V, 5V, Hz/V at 8V.
In terms of connection terminals, it includes two channels of CV/GATE OUT, standard MIDI OUT, USB MIDI, SYNC IN/OUT adopted by the volca series and monotribe, and even a littleBits OUT suitable for controlling the littleBits Synth Kit. The SQ-1 is the latest form of hardware step sequencer, compactly packed with various functions that are now essential.
Furthermore, the SQ-1 is equipped with two channels of 8-step sequencers, A and B, which not only operate sequentially but also come with various modes. For example, you can use them sequentially for a total of 16 steps, ignore the order and operate randomly, or control different parameters for A and B while operating them in parallel. From simple sequences to complex variations, you can choose from a variety of modes depending on your needs.
The 2 x 8 step buttons, in addition to the typical on/off pronunciation function, can be switched to various functions with the MODE button, allowing powerful performances reminiscent of the volca series, where you can play the sequence itself. With features like "Active Step" to skip steps during playback and "Step Jump" to play only pressed steps instantly, you can create effects like short loops and irregular rhythms. Also, by controlling the synth bass with the "Slide" effect that produces connected step-like results, anyone can easily create an acid sound.
The SQ-1, condensed with carefully selected features, adopts a compact but very solidly built metal body. When placed next to the MS-20 series, it exudes a weightiness as if it were made in the same era. It can be powered by two size AA batteries or USB bus power.
