TAPESTRY production Ateliers Robert FOUR

CIRCA 1960-1970

  “DAWN” by Michèle RAY

176cm x 112cm

Wool tapestry, creation by Michèle RAY in the 1960s for the Ateliers Robert FOUR in AUBUSSON.

This Tapestry measures 176 cm wide by 112 cm high.

It was produced in a limited edition of 200 copies. This one is number 142.

There are at least 2 versions, one with yellow sun flames and the other, more 70s trendy with orange flames (the one presented here).

The tapestry is signed on the reverse side "M. RAY" at the bottom of the lower border, in a small black fish.

At the top of the tapestry, a wooden bar is stapled across the entire width, equipped with two small screwed metal supports for solid and elegant wall mounting.

On the back, an information sheet signed by the artist himself:

Drawing: DAWN

Color: 2140

Box of: M. RAY

Job drop: n° 142 out of 200

Creation of the Robert FOUR Workshops - "The Nomad's Wall"

and signature of Michèle RAY.

It is lined with a large canvas initially dark blue in color.

It is equipped with 8 forged suspension rings sewn at the back (photos 10 and 11). One is missing at one end, to be replaced by a sewn ring (see photo 12)

There is no longer the original label on the back, but the tapestry is discreetly signed on the lower right side with the letters "HAL" and the small heraldic lion. (see photo 8)

The workmanship is superb, with very fresh colors, without discolored parts and without any wear. Its state of freshness is explained by the insolation of the lining which proves that this tapestry was stored for a very long time folded inside out.

On the other hand, the reverse is very discolored in places (see photos 9 and 10). Which in no way harms the quality or durability of the tapestry. It is of course entirely possible to replace or even simply double the lining.

DDimensions of the work: 105 cm high and 150 cm wide.

Weight : 2.62 Kilogram approximately (without packaging)
