JACK BENNY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 07/23/1962 - HFSID 323388
JACK BENNY
Jack Benny presents his perspective on the state of world Judaism for
a 1962 Jewish symposium, stating that he is very proud to see people of the
Jewish religion in high ranking positions and that they will continue to
persevere due to their sense of humor, tenacity, and determination to
succeed
Typed letter signed:
"Jack Benny", in blue ink, 7¼x10½. 1
page. July 23, 1962. Beverly Hills, California.
In part: "Dear Mr.
Lichter: In answer to your letter requesting a statement from me to be included
in your symposium: I am happy to submit the following: "The present character of
Judaism in America today is vastly different than in the distant past. This
difference is not through any change in our belief or scriptures - but by
progressive thinking and higher education. How proud we are to see
our fellowman assigned to such high and vitally important government posts, as
well as in the medical and scientific fields of endeavor. But all this is
understandable because our people have survived and will always survive and
continue to progress because of their great sense of humor - tenacity -
understanding and determination to succeed". All good wishes - Sincerely
yours". Vaudeville comedian
Jack Benny (1894-1974), born Benjamin
Kubelsky, hosted a popular radio show from 1933, moving The Jack Benny Program
smoothly to TV (1950-1965).
His comic image as a tone-deaf, penny-pinching
bachelor contradicted the real Benny, a philanthropist, devoted husband and
competent violinist. He appeared in over 25 movies, the most critically
acclaimed being
To Be Or Not To Be (1942). Normal mailing folds.
Slightly toned. Slight surface creases. Fine condition.
