The threaded ferrule is attached to the cable so you will more than likely cut it off
There was no difference in any of the Dia compe brake housing whether for Road, mtb or BMX, There were cooler colors for BMX and early mtbs and diofferent ferrules. Athough I think they did make a really thick one for mtb at one point
