Tabula Asiae XII Sri Lanka map with Elephant Ruscelli 1562

Title: Tabula Asiae XII.

Description: Old 1562 Ceylon map (Tapobrana), sometimes confused with Sumatra based upon Claudius Ptolemy map.
The name Taprobana was first reported to Europeans by the Greek geographer Megasthenes around 290 BC.
The first Geography in which it appears is that of Eratosthenes (276 to 196 BC) and was later adopted by Ptolemy (139 AD) in his geographical treatise to identify a relatively large island south of continental Asia.
In the 15th century, Ptolemy's Geography began to be printed with engraved maps; the earliest printed edition with engraved maps was produced in Bologna in 1477, followed quickly by a Roman edition in 1478 (Campbell, 1987).
Perhaps later cartographers kept both Sri Lanka and Taprobana on their maps because they respected Ptolemy’s authority.

Cartographer: Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566) was a writer and Italian cartographer.
