Dennis Matilpi was born in Alert Bay, BC, in 1951 Canada. He comes from a family of artists and started carving in 1973, and was originally taught by his brother, Lloyd Wadhams. He was from the Kwakiutl Nation from a village on the north end of Vancouver Island. Dennis was renowned for his beautiful wood carvings but also made jewellery in silver and gold. His inspiration came from the natural grace and unspoiled beauty of his surroundings.
