LIGHTS OUT, the greatest horror series of Old-Time Radio, first appeared on January 1, 1934 on a local Chicago station. It was the creation of Wyllis Cooper, who later went on to give us QUIET, PLEASE (almost the equal of LIGHTS OUT in my opinion, and many people rate it as better). After Cooper left, Arch Oboler took over and gave the series his own distinctive (that is, seriously twisted) style. With a few interruptions and relocations from NBC to CBS, LIGHTS OUT was on the air until 1947. Although none of the very earliest episodes survive, many were reworked later on. Just to confuse things for historians, Oboler tended to reuse scripts from his other series and to put new titles on them; so determining exactly how many LIGHTS OUT episodes there really were is like trying to count fireflies on a summer night. (There was also a TV series LIGHTS OUT on NBC from 1949 to 1952.)
