Title of the view:

"PARIS wie solche A 1620 im Wessen gestanden"

Very unusual panoramic copper engraved bird's eye view of Paris, France, by Mathaeus MERIAN (1593-1650).

The view, centered on Notre-Dame, is oriented to the north-east, and shows the city around the Seine river, where we can see some boats. The coats of arms of France and of Paris complete the view.

Mathaeus MERIAN (1593-1650), sometimes referred to as 'the Elder' to distinguish from his son, worked in Francfort (Germany). He is the father of the painter of flowers and insects Anna Maria Sybilla Merian.  Merian met Johann Theodor de Bry, son of the famed publisher Theodor de Bry (1528 - 1598). Merian and De Bry produced a number of joint works and, in 1617, Merian married De Bry's daughter Maria Magdalena. In 1623 De Bry died and Merian inherited the firm. Merian continued to publish under the De Bry's name until 1626. Merian is best known for his finely engraved and highly detailed town plans and city views. He is considered as one of the grand masters of the panoramic and bird's eye city views. When he died, he was succeeded by his two sons, Matthäus (1621-1687) and Caspar (1627-1686), who published his works, the Topographia and Theatrum Eruopeaum, under the designation Merian Erben (Merian Heirs). The major work of Merian is "Topographia Germaniae", which he began in 1642, with the texts of Martin Zeiller (1589-1661), a German geographe. Topographiae Germaniae has been edited in 16 volumes, from 1642 to 1654. His sons produced other volumes untill 1688, with other descriptions of Europe, as France "Topographiae Galliae", Italy, and Creete. In total, Topographiae contains 92 maps and 1486 copper engraving plates with 2142 views of cities, castles, villages, monasters, divided in 30 volumes.
