The Umba sapphire is a unique type of sapphire discovered in 1962 in the Gerevi Hills, north of the Umba River in the Umba Valley of Tanzania. Umba sapphires exhibit coloration not common to sapphires found in other parts of the world, and are recovered from the alluvial deposits of the Umba River. Since they were discovered, Umba sapphires have captivated traders and jewelers with their amazing and unique colors. Some Umba sapphires display a color change effect reminiscent of alexandrite’s, changing from light violet-red to light green depending on the light source. It should be noted that Umba sapphires, unlike most other sapphires, are virtually never treated, which makes them very unique and extremely rare. Additionally, as of November 2006, the Tanzanian government prohibits export of these sapphires, making them even more hard to find. Sapphire is the birthstone for September and is the 5th or 45th anniversary gemstone.
