Sterling Silver Candlesticks by Robert Garrard II - Antique George IV (1829)

Description

These magnificent antique George IV cast sterling silver candlesticks have a baluster shaped form with a waisted knopped stem onto a shaped base.

The waisted capitals of these large candlesticks are embellished with tiered designs emanating from a shell motif to the lower portion.

The capitals are fitted with the original hallmarked detachable sconces ornamented with further four shell ornamentation, in addition to a bright cut engraved crest of a stag trippant.

The upper portion of the waisted shaped column features a shaped knop embellished with four shell designs, with a simplified shell motif to the lower portion.

The shaped scrolling bases of these George IV silver candlesticks are ornamented with eight alternating, segmented shell designs and incorporating a further bright cut engraved crest of a stag trippant to one side and the initials "ECG"* to the other.

The shaped collet rim of each candlestick bears the later engraved inscription date "1904", in addition to the retailer"s mark "Garrards, Panton Street, London".

These cast silver candlesticks were crafted by the important and renowned London silversmith Robert Garrard II, subsequently R & S Garrard & Co.; they are a high quality and gauge, as to be expected from this silversmith.

These magnificent candlesticks are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire.

* Due to the combination of these initials and heraldic crest, it can be associated to the Gadsby family.

Condition

These antique cast silver candlesticks are a magnificent gauge of silver, magnificent quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The cast ornamentation is all very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the rim of each candlestick and part hallmarks to each sconce sleeve are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the magnificent gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of antique silverware.
