A response to Ernst Haeckel's Riddle of the Universe, Henry Drummond's The Ascent of Man, and M. Alfred Binet's The Psychic Life of the Micro-Organisms in which the author discusses the place of the psychic/vito-energy or soul-life in the development of organisms. Also included are the author's critique of Prohibition and vaccination (in chapters 92-94).   

Hermann Wettstein (1840-1937) was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1848. He was a watchmaker and jeweler by trade. In 1900 he was a resident of Fitzgerald, Georgia, and by 1913 had relocated to San Francisco, where he resided until his death.
