Rudy's little Traction engine is an excellent beginner project...  Build a nice little steam tractor on a small 6" or so lathe  with minima out for himself and then express this knowledge to beginning craftsmen who would read his magazine article!  As a machine project, a relatively easy project for an advanced beginner of average talents, maybe a little strong for a first attempt beginner, but, not impossible either.  The engine described in the drawings was built on a 6" lathe and small drill press with normal shop tools,  some silver soldering with torch is required but no castings are required.  A beginner who knows how to read and understand drawings and build parts like those drawings can build and assemble this engine.
