Large antique copper engraved Post roads map of Germany, with Poland, Switzerland, Austria and the Low Countries, by Matheus SEUTTER (1678-1757). 

The map shows the post routes throughout central Europe, from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Gulf of Venice in the South, and as far west as Paris and east to Krakow. The map is densely engraved with towns, rivers, and various types of postal routes as identified in the key at top right. The decorative title cartouche features postal carriers traveling by horse and carriage.


 Mattheus SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. He was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of "Imperial Geographer".

Condition : good condition, a smooth aureol in lower right corner, on strong paper.
