    Scott Nellis

    (1945- )

    American painter and printmaker

Born on August 2, 1945 in Denver, Colorado, Scott Nellis’ interest in art has always been the dominant force in his life. He created his first oil painting at age 13, after being inspired by a cubist exhibition. The artist won awards in local art shows and first exhibited in the Denver Museum of Art at age 17. Since then he has exhibited in various local and national shows.

Scott’s interest in printmaking began at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1967 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1969. The artist explored the screen process extensively as a medium of creative expression and has continued to develop new forms and techniques in the process.

While being influenced by many artists from surrealist Rene Magritte to American painter Thomas Hart Benton, Nellis has established his own style. He is known especially for his graphic landscapes which often take the form of a triptych.

The prints involve large color gradations (blends) creating a dramatic effect of atmospheric light. The natural elements of the landscape have been simplified to essential linear forms which are composed to create a feeling of considerable depth.

He works in a softer or painterly style in certain prints and oil paintings where the atmospheric quality is created with modeled forms and layers of shaded color. One of Nellis’ main interests in his work is “to create a sensual quality that connects man and nature”. Nellis’ work is in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada and Europe.
