Decorative antique map of the quartier de l'Ecole de Médecine, the quartier St Michel and a part of St Germain-des-Prés, in the center of Paris (France), engraved by L. Laguillermie.

The map has been dressed from the work of Cassini (1714-1784), and before the transformations realised by the Baron Haussmann.

In bottom, a view of the Théatre de l'Odéon.

Georges-Eugène Haussmann, commonly known as Baron Haussmann (1809-1891), was a French official who served as prefect of Seine (1853–1870), chosen by Emperor Napoleon III to carry out a massive urban renewal programme of new boulevards, parks and public works in Paris commonly referred to as Haussmann's renovation of Paris. Critics forced his resignation for extravagance, but his vision of the city still dominates central Paris. The transformations are such that we speak of «Haussmannian» buildings for the many buildings built along the wide avenues pierced in Paris under his guidance, the work carried out having given the old medieval Paris the face that we know it today.

The Cassini maps are the first topographic and geometric maps made of the Kingdom of France as a whole. It was compiled by the Cassini family, mainly César-François Cassini (Cassini III) and his son Jean-Dominique Cassini (Cassini IV) in the 1700s.
