An antique copper cartwheel penny from the reign of George III. The coin has been counterstamped "832". The date, which is below the Britannia portrait is obscure. This model produced by Matthew Bolton in Birmingham was made in 1797 only, so the date is never in doubt. In 1799 these were replaced by lighter coins and again lighter ones still in 1805 and 1806. This was due to the sharp rise in copper prices during the Napoleonic wars. Most of the cartwheel pennies were quickly melted down and made into the new lighter models. The remaining ones are scarce. This example weighs 27.1gm - when new it would have been 25.6gm.  The copper did not wear as well as the bronze introduced from 1860, so good examples are very rare and expensive  Many thanks for looking.
