PRESS REVIEWS

"Without doubt, the Argentinian director's [Hugo de Ana] production is one of the best around, for the quality of sets and costumes, for the traditional yet modern / high-tech look, for the theatrical sense and the wisdom in all details and gestures for every cast member, and for the highest philological attention to every word of the libretto.

Gianandrea Noseda leads the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio expertly and securely, exuding rich colours and details especially in the wind section which is so important for the organic structure of this Verdian masterpiece. The Maestro from Milan knows how to communicate between pit and stage and creates high-emotional intensity in perfect harmony with the intentions of the composer." (Liricamente)
"More than satisfying was the musical part under the excellent conductor Gianandrea Noseda, prodigal of preciousness and attentive to restore the richness of colour and tone of the score... a special mention deserves the true protagonist of the work: the Philip II of Ildar Abdrazakov, whose breadth and softness of timbre took nothing away from the inner torment of the sovereign stretched between the call of duty and private torments. " (Corriere della sera)
"A Bravo to Noseda who managed to steer the complicated machine that is Don Carlo, an opera unmatched in poetic inspiration, human and civil, spreading a layer of sound-painting not less dense than the spectacle on stage: in line with the colours and turbid moods that dominate it. " (La Repubblica)
"Just because of the ability to bring each element to its dramatic function, it would be unfair and downright wrong to think of De Ana's staging as merely illustrative, as if the director must necessarily be reduced to the application of alternatives to theatre tradition. On the contrary the director is always present and shows himself in the excavation of the characters and their relationships." (Operaclick)
"Gianandrea Noseda's conducting is excellent, combining large-scale grandeur with finesse, and the orchestra and chorus are world class. Ramon Varga's protagonist is elegantly voiced, supply phrased and with admirable heft for his outbursts. Ludovic Tezier provides elegance and phenomenal breath control as Posa, and Ildar Abdrazakov's Filippo is in the grand tradition, his voice rich and velvety. If you are looking for a well sung and traditional performance then this will appeal." (Opera Now)

REVIEW
If you are looking for a well sing and traditional performance then this will appeal --IRR, Feb'15

It has exactly what one would expect of a Don Carlo of yore, from an ornate choir screen in the opening San Yuste scene to a giant statue of Charles V in the final scene, as well as huge, ornately carved columns throughout and details as the Habsburg double headed eagle emblem. --Opera, Aug'15
