Large unusual engraved bird's-eye view of CAIRO (Egypt), by Sebastian MUNSTER (1488-1552).

The view shows in detail the architecture of Cairo during the reign of the Ottoman Turk empire. The Nile River runs across the bottom of the map, with sailing ships along the water. The right, or south, side of the view shows pyramids and ruins in a mountainous region.  The view presents are also examples of horticulture and irrigation. At the top of the view, we can see the Citadel and the city’s gates.

On back, a small view of Babylon and of a goat.

Sebastian Münster (20 January 1488 – 26 May 1552) was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and a Christian Hebraist scholar. His work, the Cosmographia, was the earliest description of the world.

The Cosmography by Sebastian Munster has been edited in 40 editions, between 1544 and 1628.

The geographical is based on the work of Abraham Ortelius and Braun & Hogenberg.
