Joseph Solman, a prolific expressionist portrait painter, was born in Russia in 1909 and arrived in the United States with his family at the age of three. His artistic journey began early, and after high school, he pursued his passion at the National Academy of Design. However, Solman found inspiration not only in formal education but also in the dynamic scenes of the New York City subway, sketching passengers during late-night rides. In 1934, he held his first solo exhibition, influenced by French modernism, particularly Georges Rouault. He was a key figure in "The Ten," a group of expressionist painters known as the "Whitney Dissenters," and was dedicated to modernism, even serving as an editor of Art Front Magazine. Solman's art blended realism with abstract expressionism, capturing the essence of his subjects in richly-hued canvases. His work spanned various themes, from city streets to studio interiors and portraiture, always embracing the power of the subject to convey pattern, poetry, drama, and abstract design. Throughout his life, he received critical acclaim and left a lasting impact on American art.
