William Heywood (1857-1919) was an historian specifically intrigued by the medieval history of Italy. In this work, Heywood splits his instruction into three different books: The Palio alla Lunga, The Giuoco del Mazzascudo, & The Palio alla Tonda. Heywood describes different sports endeavors in Central Italy, including The Palio of Siena. The Palio di Siena is one of the most awaited events of the summer in Tuscany, and is ancient in origin. It's Italy's most famous horse race, taking place twice a year in piazza del Campo, Siena's main, medieval, shell-shaped square. The stars of the Palio who have competed in the event for centuries with passion are districts called "contrade" into which the city is divided. The historic tradition dates back to 1633. Another event is The Giaco del Ponte, an historic reenactment and display that takes place every year in Pisa, across two main moments: the historic procession-parade along the riverbanks & the Battle of Ponte di Mezza, in which teams from the main neighborhoods belonging to the city's two rival factions challenge each other. The winner is determined by whichever team manages to maintain control of the bridge, pushing the cart (and the opponents) to the opposite end of the rail. The first known edition of the Giaco del Ponte dates back to February 22, 1568.

A complete work (all plates intact) with a beautiful custom wrap-around vellum binding. Presents well.
