Robert Lyn Nelson, born in 1955, is a highly acclaimed American artist renowned for his captivating paintings depicting marine wildlife in his unique "Two Worlds" style, which beautifully portrays life both above and below the ocean's surface. From an early age in San Bernardino County, California, Nelson displayed an exceptional talent for various artistic mediums, including murals, sculptures, landscapes, and still life. His talent was recognized by his ninth-grade history teacher, David Radcliff, who provided him with a library pass for independent study, focusing on the art of specific historical periods like Greek and Roman artwork. Nelson's dedication and skill led him to successfully complete a comprehensive study of Rembrandt van Rijn portraits, a remarkable achievement. After attending Chaffey High School and Chaffey College, he earned a full scholarship to the San Francisco Academy of Arts. A pivotal moment in his life occurred in Hawaii, where a profound encounter with whales while surfing off Lahaina inspired him to create paintings that conveyed the ocean's pulse and spirit. This transformative experience gave birth to his groundbreaking idea of simultaneously depicting above- and below-water scenes on the same canvas. Nelson immersed himself in Hawaiian landscapes, seascapes, and marine activities, further shaping his artistic vision. Beyond his artistic achievements, he established the Robert Lyn Nelson Studios, utilizing commercial advertising to promote his work successfully. Nelson's paintings gained international recognition, with notable exhibitions, including the U.S. Pavilion at the 1998 World Expo in Lisbon and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in 2001. He has made significant contributions to environmental causes, donating artwork to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and receiving the Local Environmental Hero award from NOAA in 1997. Robert Lyn Nelson's artistic legacy continues to captivate viewers worldwide, showcasing his deep connection to the ocean and his commitment to marine conservation.
